Angela + Angela \\ Durham, NC

Angela and Angela were so connected during this shoot in downtown Durham.  This was the first couples session that they've had in their in their 18 years together.  What a privilege and honor.

For this shoot we chose the Highway 147 overpass just near the American Tobacco Campus and then wandered down the American Tobacco Trail to chase some light and vibes.

Molly + Asher \\ Eno River, NC

On a beautiful Sunday morning, Molly, Asher and their dog Basil, met me and we ventured out to the Eno River for a sunrise engagement photo session.  This one was special because we all got to know each other by enjoying nature together and plus we used the opportunity to capture Molly and Asher's (and Basil too) connection as they approach their wedding day!

Josh + Shelley \\ Durham, NC

Outdoor adventure photographers Josh and Shelly Hartman journeyed their way back to North Carolina so we could hangout and make some art together.   We did a couples shoot in downtown Durham, N.C. in the Central Park district popping into the world famous coffee shop, Cocoa Cinnamon.

Before the shoot I gave Josh a little "homework assignment".  I told him to write Shelly a letter telling her what she means to him (you can see that moment below).   He crushed it as expected and melted her heart.

We ended the session with a some portraits with Josh and Shelly's custom Brompton Bikes...followed by beers at Motorco of course.

Brian + Ellie \\ Durham, NC

I love photographing other artists.  They're my absolute favorite subjects because they're so willing to experiment, take risks and are intuitively creative.  When they're an artist couple...it's even better.

Brian and Ellie are two amazing latin style dancers who recently started their own YouTube Channel.  I got to do a session with them while educating some other photographers in downtown Durham, N.C. at the Central Park District.

A few of the shots you see below were created by reflecting the surrounding environment off of my iPhone and into the lens.  A couple of the other shots were taken in a dry concrete swimming pool in a skate park and the final shot is an in-camera double exposure.

Holly + Kevin \\ Durham, NC

This was such a special shoot.  Holly and Kevin are the parents of Max who I taught for 4 years at an art school in Durham.  Holly contacted me about doing the very first couples shoot of her and her husband Kevin.  After a ton of re-scheduling, we finally did it!

Wayne + Melissa \\ Durham, NC

Wayne and Melissa have a really special connection and passion. For this shoot I challenged myself, Wayne, and Melissa with an urban settings that is usually challenging but on this particular occasion it didn't feel that way because of Wayne and Melissa's natural, authentic connection.

Crystal + Craig \\ Durham, NC

Crystal and Craig walked around downtown Durham, NC with me a few weeks ago for some couples photography.

For this shoot my goal was to challenge my own norm of using available light in a traditional way.

For example, some of the first shots we did were in the basement of the 21c Museum Hotel. It's dark, florescent lights were everywhere and I had no flash.  I even set my camera to "Auto ISO". This is actually a scary thing for a photographer because you have no clue exactly how your camera will react in certain areas because of the inconsistent lighting.  I approached it with confidence in myself and my previous abilities though.

Another example was shooting portraits in broad daylight.  I took Crystal and Craig and plopped them right in the midday sunlight for many of the shots.  This creates harsh light and it sometimes can make your subjects "squint" (which happened during this shoot).  I used the sun to back light them and luckily it worked out.  Seriously..it was luck.

Apart from the nerdy photography stuff, the shoot was so refreshing because I got to document Crystal and Craig's sincere, authentic love.  I found myself smiling so much while editing these.

Kristen \\ Raleigh, NC

I'm not sure if Kristen Hill of Kristen Abigail Collective knows how much of my musician work was influenced by her musician work.  She's shot the likes of Ryan Adams, Jason Aldean, Carrie Underwood, Mat Kearney, Gregory Alan Isakov and too many more to name.  I even remember emailing her and asking how she was shooting all of these big names.  Her answer: "I hustle".

Since then I put her "hustle" into practice and have ventured into the musician portrait photography genre a bit.  It's been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life getting the shoot Stelth Ulvang (of The Lumineers), Ben Sollee, Griffin House, Nappy Roots, Laura Ballance and many more!

If you're interesting in getting into the music industry or need promo for you band then contact her at kristenabigailpm@gmail.com

Here's some photos from the portrait shoot I did with her in downtown Raleigh.

Defacto Thezpian \\ Durham, NC

I met Raheem (aka Defacto Thezpian) at a holiday party.  We talked.  I shared my stories (and tequila) of doing photography with musicians and how Stelth Ulvang played Outcast songs in my classroom..."cause the whole world loves it when you make that sound..bah bah..bah bah bah bah" was what would've heard if you were there.

Afterwards we exchanged contact info and set up a photo shoot in Durham, NC.

It's always an adventure and pleasure to work with positive, artistic humans.  Here are the photos from the shoot.
