After photographing intimate weddings all over Durham and central North Carolina, I've learned that the "best" location isn't always the most popular one. Some places are perfect for sunrise, others are incredible in the fall, and a few are ideal if you're bringing family or your dog.
This guide shares my favorite outdoor elopement locations, what each one is best for, and what couples should know before choosing a spot.
My top five locations around Durham to elope at:

Penny’s Bend is one of my favorite secret locations to shoot elopements! Don’t be fooled by the modest parking lot and old sign because once you cross the footbridge you enter into a beautifully untouched piece of nature on the Eno River!
The first time I hiked here I saw a 4 foot black racer, a giant stag beetle, two bucks, a blue heron, a huge snapping turtle so the wildlife alone was enough magic for me but the trail is unique too!
The trails are almost never crowded especially during the week but if you want to ensure you’re the only one the show up at sunrise for sounds of nature and beautiful light streaming through the forest!
The trail follows the Eno River and wraps around the property eventually leading you right back to the parking lot after walking up and down a steep but easily hikeable trail through meadows and perfectly kept forests.
Penny’s Bend is the perfect free outdoor location for your Durham elopement!
Occoneechee Mtn. Overlook is a moderate hike up to the highest point in the area with views to prove it! Eloping here is perfect if you want the views but aren’t down to be sweaty at the top because there’s a shorter hike up a gravel road by the Ranger Station which is less than half a mile compared to the regular trail at over 2 miles.
Occoneechee Mountain is pretty busy during the day and weekends so I recommend hitting up the sunrise or sunset during the week as there will be much less traffic to interrupt you elopement.
You’ll love the easy access off of I-85 and how diverse the area is plus the views at the top!
Merritt’s pasture is less than ten minutes from chapel hill nestled on 32 acres of gorgeous rolling hills and well kept trails. Eloping here at golden hour is a must!
because the town of chapel hill owns the land it is well-maintained year round and is well trafficked especially on the paved part of the trail but if you keep going you’ll find some of the best spots for elopments in the triangle and best of all it’s totally free and super easy to access!
I recommend doing your elopent at sunset because the light is perfect and your photos will turn out great! You’ll be walking over a mile on the trail but it’s super easy and there’s only one gradual hill to climb at the end in the pasture.
The eno river is full of special places to elope but I recommend the Ped bridge because it’s simple to park at the cox mountain trail and quickly hike to the bridge within 15 minutes!
if you’re wanting a location off the beaten path then keeping going past the bridge and wander through fews ford, Fanny’s Ford Trail, or (my personal favorite) Holden mill trail.
I suggest a sunset elopement on the eno on a weekeday but if you have go on the weekend then choose the sunrise to head off the crowds!
Duke east campus is a great place for an outdoor elopement because the photo ops are endless and you won’t spend an arm and a leg to get married at one of durham’s most historical places!
whether you want a hip urban vibe and some quality grafitti or to share your vows inside of a century old magnolia tree, Duke’s east campus is a really beautiful and simple place to elope right in downtown durham!
I recommend finding a quiet spot away from the duke wall trail that surrounds the campus because not many people leave the mile long path. Arrive at sunset for beautiful morning light all around you!
